How Do I Wait on God?

Trusting God When His Timing Is Different From Mine

BEGIN THE STUDY

Waiting can be one of the most difficult parts of the Christian life. We may pray faithfully and still wonder why God has not answered, opened a door, changed a circumstance, or fulfilled a desire. Scripture teaches us that waiting on God is not wasted time. God uses seasons of waiting to deepen our trust, strengthen our faith, shape our character, and teach us to depend upon Him rather than our own understanding.

FEATURED SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 40:31

Isaiah 40:31
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
King James Version

Waiting Does Not Mean God Has Forgotten You

One of the hardest parts of waiting is wondering whether God sees what is happening. Scripture reminds us that God never loses sight of His children. His silence is not absence, and His delay is not neglect. Even when we cannot see what God is doing, we can trust His character. The Lord knows our needs, hears our prayers, and remains faithful while we wait.

Psalm 27:13-14
13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.
King James Version

God's Timing Is Different From Ours

We naturally want answers quickly, especially when the need feels urgent. Yet God sees what we cannot see. His purposes extend beyond the moment in front of us. Waiting teaches us to surrender our timetable and trust the wisdom of the One who knows the beginning and the end. Faith does not require us to understand every delay. It calls us to trust the God who does.

Ecclesiastes 3:1
1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
King James Version
Ecclesiastes 3:11
11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
King James Version

Waiting Can Strengthen Your Faith

God often uses seasons of waiting to develop spiritual strength that could not be produced through immediate answers. Waiting exposes where we have placed our confidence and teaches us to depend more fully upon the Lord. As we continue seeking Him, praying, and obeying His Word, our faith can become stronger even before our circumstances change.

Isaiah 40:29-31
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
King James Version

Keep Praying While You Wait

Waiting on God is not passive resignation. Scripture encourages believers to continue in prayer. Bring your desires, fears, disappointments, and questions before the Lord. We may not know when or how God will answer, but prayer keeps our hearts turned toward Him and reminds us that our dependence is upon God rather than circumstances.

Philippians 4:6-7
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
King James Version
05

Continue Doing What God Has Already Told You

Sometimes we become so focused on the answer we are waiting for that we neglect the responsibilities God has already placed before us. We can continue obeying Scripture, serving others, loving our families, working faithfully, worshipping God, and growing spiritually while we wait. We do not need to know tomorrow's answer in order to obey God today.

Galatians 6:9
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
King James Version
06

Do Not Let Waiting Become Worry

Waiting can easily become a place where fear and imagination take control. Jesus taught His followers not to carry tomorrow's troubles before tomorrow arrives. God gives grace for today. When our minds begin racing ahead, we can return our attention to the Lord, His promises, and the responsibilities He has given us for this day.

Matthew 6:33-34
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
King James Version
07

Trust God Even When the Answer Is Different

Trusting God means surrendering not only the timing of the answer but also the answer itself. Sometimes God opens the door we hoped for. Sometimes He closes it. Sometimes He leads in a direction we never expected. Biblical faith rests in the Lord rather than in receiving a particular outcome. We can acknowledge Him and trust Him to direct our path.

Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
King James Version

Hope in the Lord While You Wait

Christian waiting is not empty uncertainty. Our hope rests in the Lord Himself. Circumstances may remain unresolved, but God remains faithful. We can wait with expectation because our confidence is not ultimately in an event, opportunity, relationship, or circumstance. Our confidence is in the God who loves us and remains sovereign over our lives.

Psalm 130:5
5 I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
King James Version

Take the Next Faithful Step

You may not know how long the waiting season will last, but you can choose faithfulness today. Pray about what concerns you. Read God's Word. Obey what He has already shown you. Seek wise counsel when needed. Refuse to force doors that God has not opened. Then take the next faithful step and entrust what you cannot control to Him.

Psalm 37:3-5
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. 4 Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 5 Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
King James Version

CLOSING PRAYER

Prayer

Heavenly Father, waiting is difficult when I cannot see what You are doing. Help me to trust Your wisdom and Your timing. Keep me from allowing fear, impatience, or disappointment to control my heart. Teach me to pray faithfully, obey Your Word, and remain faithful in the responsibilities You have given me today. Give me wisdom to know when to act and patience to know when to wait. Above all, help me desire Your will more than my own. Strengthen my faith and keep my hope fixed upon You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
